Church Services September 2004

            FROM THE CLERGY

New Pattern of Worship beginning this month

At last we've got there.  Suggestions have been made, consultations undertaken, opinions listened to, and negotiations carried out.  The Bride Valley Churches Team Council had a special meeting and what we begin this month is its final agreement.  Mind you, it's not set in stone, and there is limited room for a minor change or two (Puncknowle and Littlebredy please note).

One Church sees no change (Swyre), there have been slight changes to Service times (Burton Bradstock, Littlebredy and Long Bredy), and there have been changes to both times and Sundays (Litton Cheney, Puncknowle and Shipton Gorge).  Do please look at your own community's section of this BVN to see the details.

The reasons for all this I hope are now widely understood, but they revolve around my new duties as Rural Dean requiring me to be elsewhere in Lyme Bay Deanery on the 2nd and 4th Sunday mornings of the month, and the request by the wider Church to avoid making routine use of retired clergy (whom we have depended on for many years).  At the same time we have generally agreed that Family Services should move to 11.00am and brought in some minor changes which individual Churches have requested.

The good news is that no Services have been lost; the bad news that changes have had to be made; our request is that we all remember that adage "you cannot please all the people all the time".

This, however, need not be the end of the story.  It is possible to have more Services than we have planned, provided we in the Bride Valley can develop the ability amongst ourselves to lead and resource these Services.  We should also be aware that we do not, even should not, have to stick to our own village Church.  All our Churches are there, amongst other things, to help us to worship God through Jesus Christ.  If we travel to work and to the shops, why not to church too?  Think about it!

Bible Society

The Bridport and District Action Group organised the very successful picnic tea at Bridehead, Littlebredy (by kind permission of Sir Philip and Lady Williams) on Sunday 20th June. A visit to the Scented Garden in the village was followed by a special bi-centenary service in St. Michael's Church. Mr. Brian Coupland gave a most inspiring address on the growth of The Bible Society over the past 200 years. A retiring collection for the Bible Society amounted to £80.00.

The Forecourt Sale held on 7th July outside the United Church, East St, Bridport was well patronized. With coffee in the Hall £237.70 was raised.

The Bi-centenary Celebratory Service in thanksgiving for the Bible Society since 1804 to the present day will be held at Lyme Regis Baptist Church on Sunday 19th September at 6.30pm. The minister, The Rev'd Mark Welch, will be the preacher. As this is a special interdenominational occasion please give this your support and encourage your friends to come along too. A warm welcome is extended to all.

Thorner's CE VA Primary School

The beginning of yet another school year, how time flies!

We wish all those pupils who left in July, year 6 and others, all the best for the future in their new schools with their new classmates and teachers.  Many of you will find it quite different because the classes and buildings will be bigger, much easier to get 'lost' but we are confident that you will soon find your 'feet'.  We trust that you have all enjoyed your time here at Thorner's.

Welcome to all those new pupils who will be starting with us in September to either start their education, or to further it.  We hope that you enjoy the experience of being part of a small caring community and make the most of all the opportunities that are or will be available to you during your time here at Thorner's.

In July we also said goodbye to Miss Dewey, who has obtained a permanent position not too far away at Loders, we are hoping to keep in close touch with her so do not be too surprised if you see her wandering around.  We welcome on to our team Mrs Ellsworth, many of you will already know her as she is fairly local, and we at school are all looking forward to getting to know her and working with her during the coming year.

At the time of writing we are still in holiday mode so why not try this word search composed by children in Class 4 and based on their Dartmoor trip?

Claire

Martin

We all had a great time and list of words above trigger the memory.  Incidentally, 'Claire' is the name of one of the Youth Hostel staff and 'Martin' is known as 'Bat Man'.  He is an expert on bats and gave us a very entertaining evening which included the 'Bat and Moth' game (demonstrating how bats use sonar to hunt) as well as a riverside observation in the dusk and darkness.  Happy memories!

First Steps Parent and Toddler Group

Welcome to the new term: we hope you had great hols. We begin on Wednesday 1st September at Long Bredy Village Hall, 10am till 12noon. The Health Visitor will be coming on that day and also to the first session of each month for baby-weighing, advice etc.  This term, the group will meet at Long Bredy Village Hall every Wednesday except the second one (8th September) when we will be at Littlebredy Village Hall.

The group has toys and activities for all pre-school children. After successful fundraising last year, we have some lovely new resources. For parents and carers we offer coffee and friendly chat and the chance to meet other parents in the area.  For further details, please contact:  Bridget 898600, or Jo 482346, or Julie 897178, or Rachel 482246.

Bride Valley Fledglings Playgroup

We want to say a Big Thank You to Mick at the Crown Inn, who once again played host for our Family Fun Night on 24th July - also to all the Crown Puncknowle Fundraisers who helped us on the night with the BBQ. The weather was great, as was the music played by the volunteer band from London, The Vintage, who had people up dancing in the dark by the end of the evening - they were a big hit!

Our treasurer tells me a profit of around £250 was made on the night, and the winner of the Raffle first prize (a DVD) was Elinor Frost from Long Bredy. The children had fun on the Bouncy Castle and stalls, some of us adults had Body Shop mini-hand treatments by Kelly, and an enjoyable evening was had by all who supported us. Thanks again.

Our Summer Quiz is still on sale at the usual places so test out your General Knowledge again - first prize is £20.    This term our theme is all about "Nursery Rhymes", some old favourites and some less well known. The children's favourite and most requested is still  "Baa Baa Black Sheep".

For information about Playgroup, please ring me anytime

GREAT SPONSORED CYCLE RIDE

10.00 am - 6.00 pm

Saturday 11th September, 2004

Cycle or walk around some of Dorset's churches and chapels to raise money for the church of your choice and for the Dorset Historic Churches Trust.

Charity Commission Registered Number 282790

Over £35,500 was raised by the Cycle Ride last year and half of this was returned to parishes immediately. The Trust has been able to help churches (of all denominations) in Dorset with grants and loans for repairs and it is essential that this work can continue. Rarely is a request turned down.

Those who take part, on a bicycle, on foot, in a wheelchair or indeed on a horse, will be helping to raise money not only for the Dorset Historic Churches Trust, but also the church of their choice. The great thing about this sponsored ride is that it is very flexible - you can visit as many (or as few) churches and chapels as you wish and start and finish at your choice of times. Those unable to take part in the actual ride, can help out by staffing their local church to welcome visiting cyclists and if that is impossible, anyone can be a sponsor! So there really is a part for the whole community to play.

Organisers  ( from whom Sponsorship forms may be obtained ) are as follows:-
Burton Bradstock    Howard Bongers 898029

                             Littlebredy                       Sir Philip Williams

Long Bredy                  Sponsorship forms available in church

                                Puncknowle               Ann Roberts   897716

                             Shipton Gorge           Janet Lane  897241

  Burton Bradstock Players

We will once again be holding a series of informal playreading evenings in the autumn.   These evenings are great fun and you will not be asked to 'do' anything, except read a part if you want to - and you can come just to listen if you wish!   If you have not been before, do come along - everyone is welcome.  These are not being held with a view to production!   Dates will be:   Wednesdays - 15th, 22nd & 29th September, Tuesday 5th & Wednesday 13th October - at 7.30 p.m. in the Reading Room, Burton Bradstock.

Bride Valley Gardening Club

We enjoyed a very successful Mini Show again in July with lots of entries although there were fewer roses and fewer annuals this year - possibly due to the weather just before the Show.      Below is a list of the overall winners in each Class:

A Rose            Jenny Prentice

Annuals           Ann Grantham

Perennials       Max Bonner

Pot Plant         Freda Bonner

Fruit and Veg  Edwin Kingston

Herbs               Molly Gardener

            Handicraft       Molly Gardener

The overall winner was Jenny Prentice who was presented with the Fry Cup by our President Brian Prentice!!!  Any relation?!

The evening meetings with Speakers start again in October - make a note in your diary for the 2nd Monday of each month; Ann has lined up some excellent speakers!

Again Pam has asked that you be reminded about her trip on Thursday 9th September to Stanbridge Mill near Wimborne, described as the best garden in Dorset. Give Pam a ring on 897267 for more details.

New Pattern of Worship

The good news for Burton Bradstock is that the new Sunday Pattern of Worship which begins THIS MONTH has only one small change from the pattern that has been in place since 1998.  This is that our Family Service on the first Sunday of the month will now be at 11.00am rather than 9.30am previously.  All of which means that on all our regular Sundays (not Festival or 5th Sundays) the main Service will always be at 11.00am.

Family Service Time

From this month, this will now be at 11.00am.

St Mary's Church Fete - 5th August 2004

Thank you everyone, and thank you again for Burton Bradstock Church fete.  We well know of all the work that goes on throughout the year to make this event the huge success it has become.  It is a wonderful day for the village and the local community, among whom I include occasional visitors, and those visitors to the area who come year after year.  They, and we all, enjoy a splendid afternoon of colour and fun.  And nor can we forget that the money raised on this day makes an invaluable contribution to the life and work of the Church throughout the year.  This year saw the sum of £4,909.13 brought in by the fete.

And so thank you again to the members of our fete committee, who meet and plan, imagine and invent to such great effect.  What a splendid afternoon it was.    The sun shone down upon a huge crowd of people visiting the stalls, playing games, watching the craft exhibitions and pausing for the demonstrations of dancing and handbell ringing.  Thank you to those who organised stalls, and to their helpers; and to those who ran the many sideshows and exhibitions which made the whole fete such a happy afternoon; and to those who provided refreshments for us when we were hot and weary.

Over 1000 visited our fete this year, and the best advertisement for next year's in 2005 is that all these people had such a good time this year.  The work of keeping our fete improving year by year begins soon.  The fete committee will be meeting to review and plan.  If you would like to join this happy and hard working group, which makes such an important contribution to the life of our village, please get in touch with:

                        Peter Colbert                Chairman    897922

                        Margaret Holmes          Secretary     897046

They will be delighted to hear from you.

One last note is a date for your diary for next year.  The 2005 Burton Bradstock fete will be held on Thursday 4th August.  An afternoon not to be missed.

Bob Thorn

Thank you

A huge thank you to everyone who rallied round at the last minute and donated prizes for the Grand Draw (we had 35 prizes in the end) and to those people who donated food, drink or money towards items for the Hamper which was first prize.  The Hamper this year was the best ever, with a value of around £100, and was won by a holiday maker who was so pleased with the prize!

St Mary's Harvest Supper

This year, St Mary's Harvest Supper will take place on Saturday 2nd October in the W.I. Hall. The format will be the same as last year - a "shared meal" followed by a barn dance. You are asked to bring a plate of food to be put on the central table for everyone to share - different coloured tickets will indicate whether you should bring a sweet or a savoury dish. Tickets costing £3.00 each ( to cover the cost of hiring the hall, drinks, and other "incidentals", any surplus going to charity ) will be on sale from the beginning of September at the Post Office.Although this event is organised by the church, it is a community event, and everyone, especially families will be welcome. Entry will be by ticket only, and since numbers will have to be limited, don't forget to put the date in your diary and get down to the Post Office to buy your tickets!

Dorset Police Community Support Unit

The next visit of the above unit will be on Friday  3rd September.  The vehicle will be located near the gates of the Rectory Garden or if unable to park there, it will be in the bus lay-by opposite The Three Horseshoes car park.                                                                           Freddy Tame

Village Clean Up: Saturday 4th September 10.00am

Christmas Greetings for St. Mary's Church & BVN Funds?

Once again this year, we will be asking if you would like to take the opportunity of sending local Christmas greetings by way of the BVN.   This year we plan to split the donations equally between St. Mary's Church and the BVN.

The idea is that instead of buying, writing out and posting (or delivering) Christmas cards to all your local friends and neighbours, you can use this alternative scheme (or, of course, you can send cards as well!).   It works this way - you send us a donation, in return for which, your name(s) will be included in a list of all contributors on a dedicated page in the BVN.   The list of names will be below a collective Christmas greeting message to friends and neighbours (sadly, we are not able to include individual messages).

If you would like to participate, please give me your name(s), as you would like it/them to appear in the BVN list, plus your donation. Cheques should be made payable to St. Mary's P.C.C. I need this information, plus the donation, no later than 10th November, in order to catch the deadline for the December issue.

   Badminton and Table Tennis

Earlier in the year I appealed in this magazine for persons wishing to play the above in the W.I. Hall. Just a handful of people replied, and there were not sufficient numbers to make it viable to hire the hall.

Last chance. Do you want to play Badminton and or Table Tennis? Then please contact me (those who replied before need not do so this time as I still have your details), by telephoning me on 897922 or dropping a note at Pound House.

It is important that you state whether you can play afternoons or evenings and on what days. If sufficient numbers we could start in October. It's up to you.                                                          Peter Colbert

St. Martin's Summer Fair

We were delighted to welcome our Rector Bob to open officially our fair, and he was able to spend some time meeting "the locals", before dashing off to another engagement.

Many thanks to everyone who helped in the preparation and running of this event- your efforts are very much appreciated.

Our visitors were generous as usual, and it was especially heartwarming to see so many families joining in with such enthusiasm, particularly when the ferret racing got under way!

Once again we are indebted to the Jones and Sorrel families for kindly allowing us to use their land, and a special thank you to Colin Chambers for bringing his veteran car to the fair- a very unusual and interesting attraction!

We raised £715 by the end of the afternoon, a very, commendable effort, despite the downpours. The Church Tower Lighting Scheme run by Christine Cornish raised another £165, so well done everybody!

The Great Sponsored Cycle Ride     Saturday 11th September

There is still time to join our "all age" group of cyclists as we enjoy the beautiful Bride Valley route once again, visiting seven churches, and having a picnic at Littlebredy. We start at the telephone kiosk in Brook Street at 10.00 a.m. Feel free to arrange a lift home, or cycle back with us- it's a great day out, and the money you raise will benefit St. Martin's church and the Dorset Historic Churches Trust equally.

Please get in touch with me for sponsorship forms and any queries

Family Harvest Festival - Sunday, 26th. September, at 4.00p.m

This service of celebration and thanksgiving will be led by our Rector, the Rev'd Bob Thorn, and our young people will be providing food for thought as usual.

Everyone is welcome to join us at St. Martin's Church, and to our Tea party in the Village Hall afterwards.

Please note the time of this service and that there will be no Evensong this month.

The Harvest Supper - Wednesday, 29th. September. 7.30p.m

This year we are very pleased to welcome the Rev'd Bob Thorn as our special guest, and we look forward to his after dinner entertainment!

Tickets will be available from September 6th, and may be obtained from Doris Benselin, Margaret Fisher, or the churchwardens, so please book early for this popular event!

Shipton Gorge Parish Council

The Parish Council meets at the Village Hall every two months. Amongst the Council's responsibilities are two important activities:

·        Planning.

Meetings on planning applications take place at the Village Hall when required. The meetings are well advertised beforehand. Under the chairmanship of Robert Cornish the planning committee considers the applications in detail and provides the District Council with recommendations. The support the committee receives from parishioners is fundamental in preserving the village as the residents wish.

·      Playing Field

The Parish Council is responsible for the finance and upkeep of the playing field. The Parish Council is indebted to Grayham Rosamond who keeps the field in such good order. The field is well used by the village children, adults and visitors.

Playing Field Maintenance Work Day

Many, many thanks to everyone who helped make our work day in the playing field so very successful. It was a real community effort with around 30 people and lots of children coming along to help. This was fantastic and more than we could have hoped for, and of course the wonderful weather on the day made it very enjoyable too. As a result of everyone's efforts, we managed to sand and stain the seats, paint the slide, strip down and paint the basketball pole and hoops, edge all the paths, clear the weeds and the overgrowth behind the basketball fence and erect a new sign. We also took the roundabout to pieces, painted the metal parts and side sections and fitted one new top section. There are still things to be completed but the effort put in by everyone was very much appreciated.

It is fantastic to know that so many people, including children, parents and the wider community in the village were willing to turn out and give a hand.       It was a great morale booster for the parish council but more especially for Grayham Rosamond, who puts in so much effort throughout the year, to know that so many people are interested enough to come and help out with the work. Some people enjoyed the day so much that it has been suggested that we do it again in six months and may be we will! Meanwhile, a very big thank you to you all!

Mary Boughton, Playing Field CommitteeChairman

An Idyllic Summer Afternoon -Puncknowle Fete

Many people have commented on the wonderful atmosphere in the Manor Gardens for this years' fete.  We were fortunate to have perfect weather, especially after last year, and many willing helpers.  Thanks to all who gave their time or donated items for the fete with a special thank you to the children who ran the side shows so enthusiastically and successfully and helped to contribute to a grand total of £6000.  We hope that all who took part or visited enjoyed our traditional fete without which the churches and hall would struggle financially.  In the current climate the call for funds from the parishes for clergy stipends, pensions and housing continues to increase, not forgetting the constant problem of upkeep and running costs of the buildings.  Don't forget the fete doesn't run itself; help is always needed year round to organise, run stalls and plan for next year.  The date of fete in 2005 will be Saturday 30 July so please help if you can.

Harvest Lunch

26th September 2004 from 12 noon in Puncknowle Church Hall.

We have been asked to organise the Harvest Lunch this year and all villagersare invited from Puncknowle, Swyre and West Bexington to this special celebration. We anticipate a meal of quiches, meats, salads and potatoes with fruit pies to follow. This will be fairly informal and children and families are most welcome.

Contributions to the lunch or a donation will be appreciated and it would be helpful if you could let us know what food you would be able to provide in advance to help plan the event. Please telephone 898492.                                                                     Yvonne and David Buckland

Dorset Wildlife Trust

Would anyone in Swyre or Puncknowle like to deliver the Dorset Wildlife Trust magazine to their neighbours? It is only three times a year and the magazines would be delivered to your door. Such kind souls should ring Debra Keen at D.W.T. Tel 01305 264 260

Puncknowle and Swyre Parish Council

The next scheduled meeting of Puncknowle and Swyre Parish Council will be held in the Puncknowle Church Hall, at 7.30pm on the 7th September 2004.

Puncknowle Swyre and West Bexington Homewatch

There will be a meeting of all Homewatch representatives on Thursday 9th September at Puncknowle Village Hall, also present will be representatives from the Police. All representatives will have been contacted directly by me. Local residents interested in Homewatch are more than welcome to attend the meeting.

Puncknowle and Swyre Village Hall Committee.

The committee have successfully applied for charitable status. This has now put in place all the necessary issues to enable the hall to be leased from the Church. We all hope that this will be able to be processed quickly and the hall can then be run as a village hall. Once all the legal bits have been finalised the committee will call a public meeting to enable the election of a new committee to serve for 1 year to manage the hall. I trust all villagers will welcome this good news and start to consider how best the hall can be used for the benefit of the villagers of Puncknowle, Swyre and West Bexington. Ideas to the committee or myself on 898492.                                                   David Buckland Chairman

New Pattern of Worship

Beginning this month is a new Pattern of Worship for our normal Sundays, and it is all change.

We are moving our 2 Holy Communion Sundays to the 1st and 3rd of the month, discontinuing 'Puncknowle Praise' and replacing it with an Evening Service, and moving the Family Service to the 4th Sunday at the new time of 11.00am.  This last has caused some disappointment as the later time does not suit everyone ("you can't please all the people all the time"), but it's not set in stone and it may, repeat 'may', be possible to return to 9,30am after a trial period, with the agreement of Littlebredy (with whom a swap will need to take place), the availability of a Service leader for the earlier time, and of course the agreement of most Puncknowle churchgoers.

Another possibility is that we may serve refreshments before rather than after the Family Service should it be fixed at 11.00am.  Watch this space.

Here, then, is the new pattern:

1st Sunday     (5th Sept)      9.30am    Parish Communion

2nd Sunday    (12th Sept)    6.30pm    Evening Service

3rd Sunday    (19th Sept)    9.30am     Holy Communion (said)

4th Sunday   (26th Sept)  11.00am    Family Service  (Harvest        Thanksgiving)

Harvest Thanksgiving

This will be at 11.00am on Sunday 26th September and we look forward to a beautifully decorated church, with the produce in due course being given to Pilsdon Community House in Dorchester.

Church decoration will be on the preceding Saturday morning and we do encourage people to be generous in their donation of produce, as a response to God's wonderful generosity to us.                                                                                                                              Anthony Ashwell

Puncknowle Art Group

Looking back to June before our summer break we were given most generously two lunches. Firstly by Jennifer at her grand shed [art studio] guided tour. Sheds have become so popular with members that some may form a splinter group - a post modernist shed movement. In July we were given a wonderful day by Maureen and Phil, painting at Slape. We were treated to coffee and cake and lunch. Meetings begin again on September 3rd with a look at members' paintings of the "Jurassic Coastline", and 17th .

Thank you

We would like to say how much we appreciate the kindness, support and good wishes received during Margaret's hospital stay and since her return.  Our sincere thank you to everyone.

New Pattern of Worship

From this month, all our routine Sunday Services (except 5th Sunday and Festivals) will be at 9.30am and the new pattern will be as follows:

1st Sunday    (5th Sept)    Family Service

2nd Sunday   (12th Sept)  Parish Communion

3rd Sunday   (19th Sept)   Matins

4th Sunday   (26th Sept)   Holy Communion (by extension)

The 4th Sunday Holy Communion Service will often be 'by extension' in which the traditional language of the BCP Service is used, but the Prayer of Consecration is replaced by 'The Invitation' because the Service is led by a licensed Reader who will be using Bread and Wine consecrated at an earlier Service.

Harvest Thanksgiving

This will take place in church on 25th September at 6.00pm prior to Harvest Supper at the school (7.00 for 7.30pm).  The Service will be about 40-45 minutes and I hope full of joy for God's goodness to us.

The church will be decorated in the morning and we encourage the generous donation of produce, to be given to the Pilsdon Community.

Anthony Ashwell

Concert

Our thanks go to Paul and Tom Cheater and Stephen Cutting for the delightful concert they gave in early August and to Hugh and Carol Lindsay and helpers who provided an excellent supper afterwards at The Old Rectory.  The result of this fine summer evening's entertainment was over £600 towards Church funds, for which we are extremely grateful.

Church Hall

Many thanks too to Paul Adams and Paul Kingston for the newly completed work on the Church Hall.  It is now thoroughly smartened up both inside and out and we're sure those of you who use it will find it greatly improved.

On Saturday 4th September, regulars of The White Horse will again be supporting The Anthony Nolan Trust by abseiling down Hardy's Monument.  Either go along in the morning around 10 o'clock and support this event or sponsor one of the intrepid abseilers.

Litton Cheney Youth Club resumes on Tuesday 7th September.  For further details contact Paul Kingston 482384

Playing Field Fun Day

1304 - 2004  It's 700 years since a Royal Charter granted a yearly fair to Litton.  The Fifth Playing Field Fun Day will take place on Sunday 12th September, there will be new attractions to commemorate the Medieval Charter - horseshoe throwing, juggling, children's costume making and lots more .... The event starts at 10.30 am on the playing field.  Watch out for the posters!

Litton Cheney Vital Villages

The pupils at Thorner's School created a wishing tree to express how they would like the village to be developed.  Everyone who is employed in Litton Cheney has had the opportunity to complete a questionnaire.  The analysis of the questionnaires is continuing and should be completed by the end of September so watch this space!

Some Vital Villages initiatives can already be forwarded.  Some of the volunteers for 'Adopt a Footpath' have already started their roles.  For more details contact Steve Kourik 482552.

Everyone interested in improving and maintaining the Church Hall is invited to a meeting on Tuesday 14th September at 7 o'clock.  If you are interested but are unable to attend please contact Elizabeth Kingston 482384 or Wendy Taylor 482532

New Pattern of Worship

This September sees the beginning of a slightly revised Sunday Pattern of Worship.  We will be retaining our 2nd and 4th Sunday Services but the 4th Sunday Holy Communion will move to 9.30am.

Harvest Thanksgiving and Supper

This will be at 6.00pm on Sunday 19th September, in church for the Service and the hall for supper.  See Sir Philip's notes for further details.

LITTLEBREDY NOTES

You will have to go back a very long time indeed to find a month which has seen two weddings in St. Michael & All Angels, but this one is such a month.

Our own Daniel Barrett and Emma Byrne will be married here on Saturday 11th September, making it a memorable occasion not only - though especially - for them, but also for the great number of their friends and relations in the village. We shall pray for fine weather and all due celebrations on the actual day, and also for health, happiness and fulfilment throughout their married life.

The following Saturday sees the wedding of George Bowditch and Louise Kirby. Although not resident here, they have visited the village and attended church on numerous occasions, and it is good that they choose this special place for their special day. The same prayers and good wishes for lifelong fulfilment go to them as well.

The Harvest Thanksgiving Service will be held in Church the next day, Sunday 19th September, at 6.00 p.m. This will be followed by a Harvest Supper in the Village Hall (for all villagers of all ages, irrespective of whether they've been to the service or not). Volunteers will prepare a ploughman's-type meal, so approaches for help may be made to the usual suspects in the meanwhile.  Children who received small sunflowers from Judy Yates at a recent Quiz Evening should remember that the judging of the largest flower head will take place during the Harvest Supper.

Just to muddle up September's service times a bit more, the Holy Communion on the 4th Sunday (26th September) will be at the earlier time of 9.30 a.m., to fit in with the draft pattern of services being introduced throughout the valley. However, at the time of writing, it appears distinctly possible that it may shortly be able to revert to 11.00a.m., if enough people prefer the "old" time.

Turning to secular matters, the Car Treasure Hunt which had to be postponed from July will now be held instead on Friday 3rd September. Participants should please meet outside the Village Hall at 7.00 p.m., and there will be the Social Club's customary hospitality available on return. As usual, the more the merrier.
