Bride Valley News
During the first part of June, my 'little' brother Nigel (aged 55) came over from Johannesburg for his annual visit. He is employed as Catering Manager by a large Country Club on the north-western outskirts of the city, and has in his charge many black 'indigenous' staff. I use the description 'black' to place them in a particular culture, for most are male with relatives who live in traditional villages some hundreds of miles away. Not only does Nigel have to contend with tribal loyalties (or enmities!) but all kinds of folk-beliefs and practices, as well as huge problems connected to the spread of, and attitudes to, sexually transmitted disease. The stories he has to tell are sometimes amazing, mostly shocking, to people like myself from a so-called westernised sophisticated culture. I'd like to repeat a few, but for the sake of brevity, and decency, I'd better not. Nigel also has to contend with large parties for white guests at the club, many of which end in the wee small hours with the normally young partygoers more than considerably worse for wear. When a wedding reception is involved, then he has seen violent, abusive, immoral behaviour across the generations, behaviour which we might condemn as being 'third-world' when the reality is that Nigel's black staff are themselves shocked. As distant white observers, it is inappropriate for us to make holier-than-thou judgements on local black behaviour when our white 'relatives' with their westernised first world culture are behaving in equivalent ways. We should not claim cultural superiority when it comes to the judgement of moral behaviour. But it seems to me that moral judgements have to be made somewhere, and moral absolutes recognised, in our society especially, which is becoming increasingly permissive. Some of us will have seen 'Balearic-binge' TV programmes or been mugged in Bridport, others will be aware of the evils of Internet porn and date rape drugs. Most of this immorality seems to be about thrills for one individual at the expense of another, and sometimes many others. Surely we have to begin with a moral absolute to apply to all cultures everywhere and forever : "Do for others what you want them to do for you" (St Mark's Gospel, chapter 7, verse 12). Bridport & District Bible Society Action Group Forecourt Sale This will take place on Wednesday 10th July at the United Church East Street, Bridport from 9.00 am to 12 noon in aid of the Bible Society. There will be Produce, Plants and Cake Stalls. Coffee will be available in the Hall from 10.00am onwards. Burton Bradstock School On the afternoon of the last Wednesday in May I picked my way through the children from my seat at the side of the hall, lowered myself slowly onto the stage and looked up with a heavy heart into a sea of expectant, carefree faces. The occasion was a Good Work Assembly, one of a series of strategies that I introduced early in my Headship to blur the boundary between school, parents and community. The purpose of the assemblies is to let those adults interested have a chance to see what has been going on in the classrooms over the previous week. It also acts as a means of communicating to children, parents and teachers and I knew that the announcement that I was about to make was one of the most important that I had delivered to my school. Two days earlier I had started a series of interviews for the Headship of St Mary's Middle School, Puddletown. It was the first job that I had applied for since moving here and the decision to go for it was not an easy one. I have spent the last six months taking Burton Bradstock School through a comprehensive review that involved parents, children, staff, governors and members of the wider community looking hard at the school's effectiveness. The outcomes have been really positive, showing the school to be in excellent health, but with areas for continued development identified. The very nature of the review process encourages reflection and introspection and by Christmas I had come to recognize that for both the school's sake and mine a change would be no bad thing. A new Head with a fresh pair of eyes would take the school forward, guided by the strong structures in place and by the wonderfully supportive village and parent community. I also felt the need for one more challenge before I retired. Burton Bradstock School would continue to offer challenges, but deep in my heart I knew that it would be very tempting to accept the status quo and slip into the dangerous territory of complacency. I love this school and its community and that love guided me to the decision that I came to. I threw myself into the process of applying for the Puddletown job and, somewhat to my surprise I was shortlisted for interview. Not wanting to worry anyone unnecessarily I told only my teaching staff, Chair of Governors, Hil Bosworth and, of course my family. Barbara was brilliant in her support for me at this difficult time. I arrived at Puddletown determined to spell out my Primary school beliefs and philosophy, only to find myself up against three Middle School Headteachers! "Oh well," I thought, "in for a penny." Two days later I phoned Barbara from the school's car park to tell her of my appointment. I am very excited at the prospect of working with over 400 children and taking a good rural school forward, but equally saddened to be saying goodbye to our village school. There is no clever strategy for delivering this sort of news to people that you love, except face to face honesty and I watched those carefree expressions alter as I began speaking. I explained my move to the children and reassured them that it had nothing to do with them personally, that adults had the right to choose. I chose to stay at Burton Bradstock School for twelve brilliant years and I have now chosen to move on. I don't go until Christmas, and there is much to be done at our school before I leave.so enough of this hand wringing. I'm determined to enjoy my last few months with you all, and anyway I'm not moving from the village, so you'll still be pestered by me at the weekends. HOLIDAY CLUB 2002 If you enjoyed last year or just want to find out what all the fuss was about, come and join us at this year's holiday club. For more information phone Paul on ... or Sally on 897068. See you there!! Thorner's School, Litton Cheney Firstly I must thank everyone, and I do mean everyone, who made the Jubilee weekend special. What a weekend! For the days leading up to it there was rain, rain and more rain, but someone was really looking out for us because the day of our Jubilee Tree Planting was glorious, the sun shone and we were able to carry on with plan A. This involved Mr Jack Bailey, a previous Headteacher at Thorner's doing the ceremonial bit of planting the tree along with the help of two pupils. He was reminiscing about the field and how, when he was there, the football pitch went down the slope and it was very difficult for the goalkeepers to even see each other (the toss must have played an important part of any game then). He told the assembled audience how our present 'flat' field was prepared and developed. Thank you Mr Bailey for all those stories and I hope you enjoyed meeting friends again. We were then able to give our first ever performance as a Maypole team, and didn't they do well, not one ribbon tangled or one foot put wrong on this our first season .. even Miss Sheldrick congratulated the children as she can remember teaching dancing to the pupils and it was never easy on grass. This was followed by refreshments for all and a time to relive the years which have flown past. Each pupil also received a medal to remind them of the day. I wonder how many of you still have mementoes from the Silver Jubilee or the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II .. or others? The combined Jubilee fete day started very wet and gradually improved during the afternoon ending with a warm, sunny and very pleasant day. Again I must thank everyone who helped to make the day special by donating items, offering their services to set up or clear away as well as those who 'entertained'. Our maypole team yet again showed their expertise, it was only the person in charge of the music (me) who made the mistake .. my excuse .. it was the first time I had been allowed control of the CD! Our challenge for next year is to make use of not just 12 but all 24 ribbons and have two circles of dancers travelling in opposite directions. Considering how the morning started, none of us expected the day to turn out the way it did with lots of visitors and lots of enjoyment and making lots of money for both the church and school in the village. THORNER'S SCHOOL ASSOCIATION To mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee, the School organised a TREE PLANTING CEREMONY and we would like to thank Mr and Mrs Perrin for kindly donating the beautiful Maple Tree and also Wakeley Funeral Directors for donating the plaque. Many thanks to Mr Jack Bailey for planting the tree and talking to the children and also for donating a tree guard to protect it from both kinds of "little animals"! Each of the children received a Jubilee Coin in a presentation case, which included the school's name. There was also fantastic Maypole Dancing performed by some pupils with Mrs Johnstone's help and thank you to Nik Armstrong for organising themed refreshements for everyone. The FETE held on Monday 3rd June was very well attended and the sun shone gloriously making all the hard effort put in very worth while. A big thank you from TSA to Liza Adams-Smith and Mandy Wakely for their enthusiasm and dedication to this particular challenge! Thank you also to those who donated some lovely items for the Jewellery Stall and to those who brought cakes etc. Particular thanks to Mr Spicer, Mrs Slark and Mr Punter of the Fete Committee whose help and organisation we could not have managed without. Also thanks to Mrs Johnstone, the Rev'd. Anthony Ashwell and Jethro for going in the stocks where they got a soaking (at a price!)! Many thanks to all those who helped behind the scenes, the stallholders and for the last minute "fillers in' - too many to mention - ALL your help was very much appreciated - you know who you are!! We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the people of Litton Cheney for their on going support in all aspects of school life. Despite being a most dismal day, weatherwise, many people turned up and a total of £162.05p was raised from the sale of hot drinks, donated homemade cakes & biscuits, and Grand Draw tickets between 10am and 11am that morning. West Dorset Mencap are most grateful to Steve Attrill for offering to hold this charity event at Hive Café and for his contribution from the sale of drinks. There will be lots to see, beautiful Jersey cows and their calves, rare breed pigs and poultry etc. There will be a barbeque and cream teas available and of course their farm shop will be open for business. We sang Jubilee song with actions, and the children went home with balloons, flags, cake, and pictures of the Queen to colour. Thank you to Lesley who made the cake, and to everyone who helped. Pam Atkinson St Mary's celebrated the Queen's Jubilee with a service on the Sunday morning, during which symbols of the Coronation were carried in procession and held in view of the congregation:- a Bible, a flask of oil and a spoon for anointing, a towel and a bowl of water. At Her Majesty's Coronation she was presented with a Bible with the words: 'This Book is the most valuable thing the world affords. Here is Wisdom; this is the Royal Law; these are the lively oracles of God'. Central to the Coronation was the anointing of the Queen, to bless and consecrate her for her holy office. Every Maundy Thursday our Sovereign demonstrates the majesty of service, as our Lord Jesus did when he washed the disciples' feet and said, 'You are to do as I have done for you'. The children also sang their song, 'Thank you, Lord, for our good Queen'.
John Sinfield died 21 ST May Cremated 29th May at Weymouth Crematorium Rosemary, son John and daughter Amanda and family, would like to say 'thank you' for the thoughts and prayers that have been said on our behalf. We have been very happy living in Burton Bradstock. We always knew the people were 'special', but at a time like this it brings home 'just how special'. Your words will help us through this sad time. Rosemary Sinfield CELEBRATIONS TO MARK THE QUEEN'S GOLDEN JUBILEE As Chairman of the above I would like to thank the members of the Committee - David Powell, Peter Colbert, Greta Heal, Joyce Hyde, Basil Dent, Howard Bongers, Janice Bernardini, Barry Tebbs and Fel Moore - who gave of their time so willingly to ensure the success of the Jubilee celebrations. No tea party would be complete without food - and the generosity of parents who supplied it for the Children's Party on Monday, was clearly visible by the great variety of it on the laden tables! My thanks to them and the volunteers who 'waited at table'. It was a joy to see so many children taking part in the fancy dress parade, that the judging was made quite difficult for Mrs Pritchard. My thanks too for the use of the venues of the Rectory Garden and the W.I. Hall. For the Over 60s Tea Party on Saturday 8th June, our thanks are due to Joan Gillett, Gillian Redford and Barbara Pursey for all the arrangements; also to all their helpers and the car drivers involved in conveying the housebound who would otherwise have been unable to attend. There was an abundance of cakes supplied by many of the ladies from the village, which supplemented the sandwiches made by the team. Hall where members were warmly welcomed by the Society's President, Nancy Bushell. It has been a very successful year for both the society and the village with an extremely interesting series of talks on subjects ranging from The Tower of London, Punch and Judy, William Barnes to a History of Personal Hygiene, to name a few. In addition, a much enjoyed outing to The Eden Project in Cornwall plus an extremely successful Flower and Produce Show contributed to an outstanding year which culminated in the purchase by the Parish Council of the Village Post Office for the posterity and future security of the village. What a happy and friendly village to live in! BURTON BRADSTOCK W.I. The June meeting followed a successful Spring Fair raising £2144.75 for W.I. Hall Funds - and a Fashion Show held during Jubilee week celebrations. Joan Dady welcomed Mrs Chris Yeazey from Dorset County Council who talked about 10 trading standards and the work she and colleagues undertake giving consumer advise to the public. She explained how they keep a keen eye out for substandard goods, counterfeit clothes and perfumes as well as regular Supermarket checks on sell by dates. The Flower of the month was won by Joan Allan with a blue Clematis. Outdoor activities this month include Croquet, Pitch & Putt and Walks also get togethers for Tapestry and Tea in the Hall. Jill Spinney Burton Bradstock Music Festival There will be a music festival this year as Mary Ryan is planning for our enjoyment another series of concerts in St Mary's church on 15th to 17th August. Many of the well known players we have so enjoyed listening to in the past will be back to bring us more wonderful music. Full details will be given in next month's BVN. On 13th June a lovely and most venerated old lady celebrated her 100th birthday..Lyn Lingley. Lyn was born in London in 1902, just missing the Victorian Era; her mother sadly died when she was six so she came to live with her grandparents; after her father's re-marriage she returned to London where later she trained in accountancy. Her numeracy skills resulted in her becoming Chief Cashier at Rothmans and later A.C.Layton. After some years of happy marriage, to end too soon in bereavement, she returned to Dorset and accountancy, living a fulfilling village life, especially within the church. She made the vestments for the Lady Chapel and was the inspiration behind the Chancel carpet which she, with others, helped to make. Lyn is an example to us all and she now lives a peaceful life in Bymead Nursing Home, Charmouth. Her relations and friends gathered from far and wide to celebrate her birthday - a truly wonderful old lady Contributed

This year, 2002, the focus is on kindness to wildlife e.g. water, compost heaps, nectar sources, log piles, food plants for butterflies. MODBURY OPEN DAY To coincide with the National Archaeology weekend, Modbury Organic Farm will be having their open day on Sunday 21 July 2002, so there will be even more reason to come and visit us at the Modbury site! There will be lots to see, beautiful Jersey cows and their calves, rare breed pigs and poultry etc. There will be a barbeque and cream teas available and of course their farm shop will be open for business. Come along and make a day of it! As a play-group we felt we should put on a small party for the Jubilee. This took place on the 31st May following the play-group session; I would like to say thank you to all the parents for supplying the food and drink. The children enjoyed a feast of food and a few games and each child was given a flag before beginning the Half-term holiday. Thank you, too, to those who kindly donated to our party. It will not be long before we lose a number of children who will be off to school in September, my daughter being one of them. It does not seem so long ago that Rachel, Lucie and William, without mentioning them all, were toddling into play-group to pick-up their older siblings. Final farewells next month. Later in the month the play-group will be off on their end of term outing. On the last day we, hopefully, will be having a picnic in the park, when the children will receive their leaving gifts. Jubilee Fete The Fete Committee wish to thank all who attended or contributed in any way to the Fete on Jubilee Monday. The net takings amounted to a record £3727 which has been divided equally between Thorner's PTA and St Mary's Church. Many thanks also to the Puncknowle Tug of war team who may well feel aggrieved at being pulled over the line twice by a somewhat suspect Litton team! Congratulations are due to the Maypole dancers who performed expertly. Proposed Village/School Hall A Committee has been formed to take this proposal forward under the Chairmanship of Freddie Spicer (482617) with Alison Johnstone as Vice Chairman, Helen Horsley Treasurer and Ian Slark (482280) as Secretary. Preparatory to a detailed design for the hall and the submission of an application for planning permission a survey of the site has been carried out. Plans are now in the course of being drawn up and it is proposed, probably during July, to hold a public consultation exercise when anybody who may wish to do so will have the opportunity of seeing the plans and commenting upon them. It is intended therefore to display the plan together with an architect's sketch drawing for public viewing and comment via a suggestion book for a limited period. To give maximum opportunity for parishioners and other interested persons to see this display you will be able to do so at Thorner's during school hours and at St Mary's Church generally between about 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. daily. The object of this announcement is to give as much advance notice as possible, notes will be displayed at the school and on the village notice boards as to the exact date the display will be available for viewing and comment. Litton Cheney Youth Club continues to meet for those aged 8 - 17 years who live in Litton Cheney and the surrounding area. The club meets on Tuesdays running two sessions from 6.30 to 8.00 pm for juniors and from 8.00 to 9.30 pm for seniors. Last month a group of members went on a canoeing trip and this month's activities include archery and trampolining. Amy Smith and Kayleigh Roots walked the fifteen miles between Shaftesbury and Salisbury in 4 hours on Sunday 12th May raising about £200 for Save the Children. On Sunday 19th May Daniel Brewster was the first Thorner's pupil home in the Jurassic Fun Run. He ran the 5.5 km in 30 minutes with his Dad. (Walter was the fifth veteran home.) Katy Murphy also completed the run with her Mum, Natalie. Well done to them all, there were over 500 runners. Andy House completed the Jurassic Coast Challenge of 12.5 km coming 25th out of 120 runners. Farewell. Betty Cresswell sadly passed away and we hope George will find peace and rest living closer to his son and daughter on the edge of the New Forest. Golden Jubilee Village Party On behalf of everyone who attended the Golden Jubilee Party we would like to express our grateful thanks to Rose-Marie and Albert Pitcher, their family, friends and helpers who organised a wonderful party. A special thanks to Andrew Bailey who yet again travelled from Harlow to be Master of Ceremonies for this village event. Long Bredy and Kingston Russell Parish Council Rose-Marie, Albert and family would like to thank all the people who attended the Golden Jubilee Party in the village who made it such a wonderful, very successful afternoon. Also a very big THANK YOU to all their many helpers. The party was completely self-funded from the money raised from the Bingo, Buffet Evening and money raised from the Raffle, soft drinks and Donation Pot on the day. The loving care and attention to detail inside the Church and outside in our beautiful churchyard delighted and welcomed our many visitors. The music was a continuous source of pleasure; and a special thank you to our two younger players who gave their precious holiday time to practise and perform. A list of names would take two pages - but you all know who you are. From the florists right round the alphabet to the floor-sweepers, for the time and effort expended, and for the generous contributions to the stalls and the teas, thank you and thank you to each and everyone. Approximately £900 was raised to be shared between the Church and the Hospice. Jubilee weekend was doubly celebrated by Eleanor and Charlie Pack with the arrival of Maisie, a lovely sister for Toby. Welcome to the village Julie and Jamie Moon with daughters Scarlet 9, Rose 4 and a new baby due any day, one cat, four guinea pigs and one rabbit, who have come to live at 2 Rookery. Also Sara Deane and Ray Winter who have arrived at Fresh Fields. We hope they will all enjoy living at Long Bredy.
LITTLEBREDY NOTES A warm welcome to Daniel Barrett and Emma Byrne, who have moved into 2, Riverside Cottages. Daniel, of course, has spent much of his life in the village, and it is good to have them living among us full time. We hope their time here will be happy and fulfilled. Many thanks and congratulations to all those who made such a success of the Golden Jubilee Social at the Village Hall on the Bank Holiday Monday evening. To pick out a few key contributions, a special mention must be made of the great efforts made by Mike Hannigan and his team to have the refurbished Hall ready for use again (and very fine it looks, for those who've not yet seen it), of Bryan Hansford's organisational abilities in ensuring such a collective feast was available for all, of the Tweeds, who dismantled then re-erected their trampoline on site in double quick time with such skill, of Chris & Judy Yates, who have presented the Village Green with a "golden" Robinia tree, to match the silver jubilee tree nearby of 25 years ago and "Prince William's Birthday" tree since then, and of all those who so lavishly decorated the scene with flags and bunting. Thanks to all who gave it their support; it was a most memorable village event as a result. A reminder that a Harvest Supper is being planned in aid of the bells appeal at the end of September, which we hope will be equally well supported. Further details later. Are those smartie tubes in aid of the bells fund filling up? Finally, the Scented Garden will again be open every Tuesday afternoon this month - as ever, Chris & Judy hope that the inconvenience to others will be slight.
