St. Mary's Church

Each stone in this old Church of ours

A story has to tell,

Of chapped hands, and aching backs,

Of monks who learned to spell,

That they might read of yonder babe

All in a manger born,

To yeomen, serfs, and masons there

Who heathen, mere forlorn:

Great joy they brought to shepherd boys,

And men who put to sea,

And left a monument to faith

For simple folk like me.
