INTRODUCTION
Since 1958, Button Bradstock has been served by a mobile library
vehicle, siting the village once a fortnight. Within more recent years, it has
become vious that the mobile library service was becoming inadequate for the
reading requirements of the residents of Burton Bradstock, in the light of rapid
and continuing growth in the population of the village.
In accordance with the policy of the Library and General Purposes
Committee to provide small libraries in rapidly developing villages in Dorset,
e old Wesleyan Chapel was purchased from the trustees for the cost of £1,000,
and has been converted by the County Architect for use as a library. Many of
the features of the old chapel have been utilised, including the original pulpit,
which has been reconstructed as the library issue desk.
The new library's shelves carry a stock of over 3,000 volumes
including books for adults and children and a small "quick reference"
section. Facilities are available for study and browsing in the library and
a whole section is devoted to books for children.
The contractor for the conversion of the building was A. G. Down,
Ltd., Bridport; electrical fittings are by H. W. Smith & Son, Weymouth;
ceiling Southern Tiling and the floor covering by Dorset Floors.
The shelving by Terrapin Reska Ltd., has been designed to fit
in with e general decor of the building. The island cases are mobile to enable
the room to be used for other purposes, if required. The tables and chairs are
by Ercol Furniture Ltd., and the stools by W. H. Hands, both of High Wycombe.
The cost of the conversion was £2,300; furniture and shelving
£600.
